The Moms & The Book Club calves are beginning to oxplore their creative sides!
Amethyst with her calf Sonnet, Freyja with her calf Saga, Xenon with her calf Novel, Osprey with her calf Story, and Acadia with her calf Fable! The moms and calves are enjoying their time together in pasture and are offered oxportunities to socialize with farm staff through painting sessions.
Our musk oxen produce not only qiviut, but also art! These abstract, original works of art are snoot- and hoof-made by members of our herd. They are definitely not starving artists- there were lots of extra treats for motivation to explore their creative side! These one-of-a-kind paintings are fun for the musk oxen and help support their care.
The paintings created by our musk oxen involves a canvas or paper placed inside a waterproof bag with different colors of nontoxic paint. We then put feed on top of the bag, providing the musk oxen new textures and scents to explore. Each musk ox interacts with their enrichment differently; some push it aside, some "hoof" at this new item, and some ignore it completely.
Creating unique pieces of art is a form of enrichment. Enrichment provides our animals unique opportunities to express their natural behaviors in unique and colorful ways.
