Phyllis is the newest calf at the Musk Ox Farm, born to Magpie and Hickory in late May 2025. A musk ox's gestation period is 8 months. Males go into rut in the late summer/ early fall and the animals will breed in a harem.
Musk oxen are harem breeders, which means that there is a dominant male breeding multiple females at the same time. In the wild, the larger males will head-butt to establish dominance to decide the breeding male. At the farm, the specific animals chosen to breed are picked according to the best genetic practice. When making breeding decisions, a primary consideration is to keep the depth of the gene pool.
